Fangshan District, Beijing
DAY01:
Take a one-hour drive to the site, located 50 kilometres south-west of Beijing.
Learn about the discovery and study of Peking Man fossils by European, North American and Chinese archeologists in the 1920s and 30s. During World War II, all the bones found (14 skulls, 11 mandibles, 147 teeth and 11 postcranial remains) were sent to the United States to be protected from the advancing Japanese troops but never arrived at their destination.
While the fossils have never been found, scientists have reconstructed skeletons of 40 individuals and modern investigations have confirmed that prehistoric humans lived in the area between 500,000 and 230,000 years ago.
Drive back to Beijing in the afternoon.
