Amdo, "the Land of Horses", introduces the traveller to a distinct Tibetan culture. In the past, its nomadic people drove herds of yaks and goats across open plateaus. Today there are less nomads but the traditions continue. On the occasion of the Tibetan New Year or "Losar", monasteries organize an impressive feast day where people pray for prosperity for the coming year and world peace. Many rituals take place such as the unfolding huge thangkas and masked dances.
